From the retreat you can explore the peaceful waterfront village of Russell. This historic township was the first colonial capital of New Zealand and is a lovely place to spend an afternoon exploring. It can be approached by a five-minute car ferry from Opua or the passenger ferry from Paihia. For those wanting to catch a glimpse of some of New Zealand’s spectacular wildlife visit The Bay of Islands. With 114 islands and many secluded bays it is one of the country’s finest maritime parks. There is an abundance of marine life including whales, penguins, dolphins, gannets and the famous blue and black marlin. If you’re feeling adventurous the Bay also offers many activities to choose from such as sailing, diving, hiking, sky diving, jet boating and golf. Alternatively, relax on one of the Bay’s beaches and sample the fine local food and wine.
The Waitangi Treaty Grounds are also well worth a visit. As the ‘Birthplace off the Nation’, the grounds are New Zealand’s most historic site, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between Maori Chiefs and the British Crown in 1840.
